AC Milan planning revolution in defence

AC Milan are planning an overhaul in defence with many players destined to leave starting with the Donnarumma brothers.

AC Milan are preparing for the umpteenth technical revolution. Corriere dello Sport reports that besides the choice of the new coach, the management is laying the base for an overhaul in defence.

The Rossoneri will undergo changes in every department. In midfield, the contracts of Lucas Biglia and Giacomo Bonaventura expire in the summer and the two will leave as free agents. However, most changes will happen in defence.

It wouldn’t be surprising if all four goalkeepers leave. Gianluigi and Antonio Donnarumma seem most likely to leave rather than renew their contracts. Pepe Reina, who will return from Aston Villa but has a high salary of 3.2 million euros net per season, should also leave.

At this point the most likely to stay is Asmir Begovic. The 32-year-old Bosnia goalkeeper could serve as a teacher for Alex Meret who could replace Donnarumma and Alessandro Plizzari who will return at Milan at the end of the season. The Napoli goalkeeper, young but already experience with nearly 100 appearances to his name, is one of the main targets to replace Donnarumma. A helping hand could come from Gennaro Gattuso who so far has preferred David Ospina to Meret.

Regarding the defenders, Milan are oriented to confirm Andrea Conti, Davide Calabria, Mattia Gabbia and Theo Hernandez. But the former Real Madrid, highlights CorSport, is one of the most in-demand players on the transfer market just like captain Alessio Romagnoli. The sale of Mateo Musacchio, who has fallen down the pecking order, is guaranteed. Leo Duarte too will leave whether on loan or on a permanent transfer. While Simon Kjaer, after the good performances, hopes Milan exercise their option of €2.5 million.
